Bras: New babies mean new bras, but shopping for them can be a real nightmare. Depending on who you ask, the vast majority of women are wearing the wrong bra size. We can only imagine how many more women feel uncomfortable with their bras once they become pregnant and after they have  baby. Get all the support you can afford and you’ll make the right choices while bra shopping.

Cool Cheap Summer Basics

The summer is here, with Memorial Day around the corner, you’ll need more ways to keep cool while pregnant. Check out some of the more interesting finds we found at our favorite inexpensive stores and sites for about $20 or less.

  1. Tank top- If you don’t have a bunch of tank tops in different colors, what are you waiting for? A stretchy tank top is the perfect way to stay cool for less. Target’s stretch soft tank tops are great for this purpose. Buy a bunch and you can even wear them after giving birth.
  2. Slides- You can get sporty or more sophisticated slides to make each step more comfortable. Find slides almost anywhere. Old Navy is a great source of fun colorful slides in plenty of sizes. Check their online store if there isn’t one near you. It will usually have wider sizes and more colors too.
  3. Scarfs- A cool breezy scarf is the perfect accessory for your outfits. Pack a large one if you’ll be out late and want to protect against changing temperatures throughout the day. Or wear a thin delicate scarf around your hair for a casual look. The versatility and availability of scares, like the ones at Sears, make them a must-have. Once again, Target is your friend: they’ve always had a wide range of accessories for about $25 or less and scarves are no exception. If you see a scarf you like, why not buy 2 or so you always have a spare? That way, you’ll never waste time looking for that perfect scarf. Seriously, don’t feel shy about filling up a drawer or shelf with scarves of all kinds!

Modern Parenting Concepts

There seems to no limit to the different ways people parent and manage their families. We couldn’t help noticing some interesting entries in Wikipedia under the parenting section. The news is also a great source for new parenting trends. See how many of these you’ve heard of and let us know which ones you think are good or bad for the family.

Parenting coordinator: Someone who helps divorce parents organize their plans for their child. Though this sounds great on the surface, we can’t help but think that if you can’t communicate without a formal middleman, there’s a big problem. At least the coordinator can provide a good sense of perspective to a tough situation.

Celeb connection:  Anne Heche had to have one with her ex for a few years for their only child.

Attachment parenting: Thanks to an eye-catching cover on Time, attachment parenting (and breastfeeding) has been exposed to more people than ever before. Though many advocates have different definitions of it, it is a parenting style that requires more hands-on care and contact with kids, past the newborn stage. Carrying kids in slings, natural childbirth and other practices are supposed to improve kids’ physical and mental well-being.

Celeb connection: Actress Mayim Bialik discussed her techniques in the Time story.

High tech pajamas: If you ever wanted to get as much information as possible from your newborn, invest in Exmobaby’s  new biosensor pajamas. They monitor crucial info like temperature and movement. It will be released in Canada later this year and is a godsend for worried parents with sick kids.

Celeb connection: None….yet.

Travel with a Baby: 3 Tips

Wondering how to take your bundle of joy out on the town? Tired of hard-to-use seats and other equipment? Check out some interesting tips on traveling and you’re guaranteed to have a great vacation.

  1. Get a bigger car. This is a pretty drastic change to make to travel in comfort but it may be your best bet! If you’re feeling cramped and stressed while driving everyday with the baby and other children, the kids are probably going to pick up on that and act out. You’re also less likely to go out and then you’ll feel kind of “trapped” at home. So shop around for a bigger car. Check out each vehicle’s interior size online and take the baby seat with you on test drives.
  2. Ask around for old travel equipment. Asking others for help is important, especially if you have lots of kids. Friends and relatives will be happy to provide car seats, booster seats and other stuff that can make your ride smoother and save you a lot of money. Just make sure it’s still safe to use.
  3.  Doublecheck the rules. No matter what method of travel you choose, always check the rules and see exactly what is and isn’t allowed. This will help you plan the trip better, especially if you’re going by plane, where long lines and flight delays can make you more stressed. Traveling by air means understanding each airlines own rules; not everyone is the same.

Parental Words of Wisdom

Feeling down or overwhelmed by preparing for a baby? We gathered the best advice we’ve read for new parents. Enjoy some funny, strange, and surprisingly insightful tips from Snooki and other parental philosophers.

Snooki on tanning booths for kids: “You are not supposed to take kids there. Everyone knows you are not supposed to take kids there.”

Robert Downey, Jr. on parental fears: ” Does any new parent, even if you’re not a first-time parent, ever really know what to do? Only thing you have to do, the only requirement, if you can hack it, is to not transfer your own discomfort in the moment to this fresh soul, right?…You got to be mindful.”

Google executive Sheryl Sandberg on getting a work-life balance: “I was showing everyone I worked for that, I worked just as hard. But now I’m much more confident in where I am and so I’m able to say, “Hey! I am leaving work at 5:30.”

Comedian Jim Gaffigan on nutrition:  “If you want to get sick of pizza, just have some kids.”

Jessica Simpson’s Gender Statement

Jessica Simpson’s new daughter has a pretty, yet somewhat masculine name: Maxwell Drew. What is it about certain names that become more popular for boys than girls and vice versa? Believe it or not, academics follow baby naming trends and can identify how and why some names become more popular and some change gender.

*Pop culture influence: An interesting character with a memorable name means a bumper crop of kids with the same name. We like this book since it explains just how many kids were named after their parents’ favorite movie stars, TV characters and musicians. It’s fascinating to see how the names “Jennifer” and “Madison” were popular before reading the article.

Our cool name pick: Harrison (Ford), Emma (Stone)

* Gender change: This is a pretty incredible phenomenon. When names change from masculine to feminine, it seems to happen overnight. On the other hand, baby names that seem to fit either gender pretty well, like Jordan, seem to be getting more popular these days.

Our cool name pick: Taylor or Alex (for boys or girls)

What cool, unusual names do you like or plan to use in the future for your kids?

3 Steps For Wearing Non-Maternity Clothes

In this economy, we are all looking for ways to save money. Between the baby crib, stroller and mounds of diapers you will buy, you may be wondering about the best way to save on maternity clothes. Is buying early and getting your money’s worth for a full nine months right? Wrong! Items bought in the first trimester most likely won’t fit by the third. And buying oversized clothes early on to last the entire pregnancy will most likely save you money, but it will also make you feel like a big, baggy-mess for the majority of those nine months. But take heart! The key to staying stylish and chic during every pregnancy can be found deep within the array of clothes already in your closet.

Step One: Explore!

Courtesy of polyvore.com

We all have our go-to clothing staples that we love to wear with each season. But look deeper, you may find some hidden gems in the back of your closet that are perfect for every trimester. Just take inventory of some key pieces that you already have and get creative! Those long, empire-waist maxi dresses are both ultra-trendy and naturally flatter the shape of a growing bump during the long summer months.  You can also match a simple oversized knit sweater with a pair of your favorite leggings and boots for a cozy yet chic winter look.

Even your favorite shoes can help add a bit of pop to everyday maternity style. Adding colorful wedges to your favorite t-shirt and jeans combo will help bring the eyes downward, thus elongating you silhouette and slimming your overall figure.  Animal-print flats coupled with a knit dress will not only add a sense of fun to your outfit, but also keep extra attention away from the mid-range bulge.

Remember, everything that doesn’t have a defined waistline can be tweaked to fit your growing belly. It just takes a little bravery to think outside the box and mix-n-match. So whip open that closet door, clear out those cobwebs and start exploring!

Step Two: Create!

Stretchy shirts and dresses tend to pose less of an obstacle during the first and second trimester, but with pants it’s a different story.  You can try with all your might to fit into that favorite pair of barely fitting jeans (WARNING: Engaging in this behavior may results in the dreaded “muffin-top” and/or “back-fat” that your loved ones are too afraid to call you out on.), but doing this will ultimately make both you and baby very uncomfortable. Instead, slip an elastic hairband or rubber band through the button hole you want to leave undone, loop both ends back over and around the button, and voila! An easy way to extend your beltline a few inches without splurging on pricey maternity jeans.

Investing in a belly band is another great way to bridge the gap between non-pregnancy staples and maternity must-haves.  They not only help smooth out unsightly bulges underneath clothes, but can also help bolster lumbar stability, and stop the extra baby weight from taking its toll on your achy back.  Kourtney Kardashian has been a longtime proponent of products like the Bella Band, and swears by its ability to add both comfortable support and smoothness to even the most expensive of outfits. An ultra-stretchy tube top is great budget-savvy way to achieve the same effect without splurging.  While it does not offer as much low back support as the more expensive belly bands, it does create the same smooth, seamless effect under everyday t-shirts, dresses, and pants

Step Three: Share!

Yup, that’s right. Share. Instead of spending a small fortune building a temporary wardrobe, how about sharing maternity clothes with your friends, family, and fellow bumpanistas??  New online boutiques like Minefornine.com cater to women who need to dress professionally for work and play, but don’t want to bust the budget on high end maternity clothes.  It’s as simple as renting a movie. Just pick out as many fabulous items as you like, keep them for as long as you wish, then return when your belly out-grows them –absolutely no late fees!

If you’re a little uncomfortable with sharing clothes with perfect strangers, how about throwing a “Preggie Party” for you and your friends?  Invitees should bring their latest maternity jeans, tops, and dresses, and swap inventory with other party guests.  You can even arrange a bartering system to borrow clothes for an upcoming event, then return them to the original owner when done. Just add some tasty finger foods, swoon-worthy sweets, and a few non-alcoholic mocktails, and you have yourself a shopping expedition and girls’ night out all rolled up into one!

The bottom line is that there are many ways to stay fashionably pregnant without breaking the bank.  Of course the cheapest way to dress your expanding belly is to just throw on your hubby’s old sweats, but where is the fun in that? Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, and succumbing to months of frumpiness will only make you feel more self-conscious about your changing body.  Instead, embrace your new found curves and take the time to look and feel good about yourself by being a budget-savvy mama.
